Our vision

We aim to create an inclusive learning environment where students develop language skills and an appreciation of India’s cultural and literary heritage. Through structured learning, we hope to preserve Indian languages, help younger generations connect with their families, and bring people from different linguistic backgrounds together.

Languages and programs

Sanskrit

Explore Sanskrit through listening, speaking, reading and understanding. Depending on age and experience, classes may include spoken Sanskrit, basic grammar, reading and writing, subhashitas, traditional literature, stories from Indian texts, prayers and shlokas, and cultural and philosophical concepts.

The program helps students appreciate Sanskrit’s continuing place in India’s intellectual, literary and cultural traditions.

Tamil

Build practical Tamil skills while connecting with Tamil heritage, literature and culture. Learning is designed to be engaging and relevant for students growing up in a multicultural Australian community.

Depending on age and prior knowledge, students will progressively learn to:

  • Communicate confidently in everyday Tamil.
  • Read and write Tamil script, build vocabulary and understand basic grammar.
  • Enjoy Tamil stories, poetry, songs and literature.
  • Explore traditions and festivals, and use Tamil in family and community settings.

Hindi

Develop Hindi language skills while exploring India’s diverse cultural and literary heritage. Learning Hindi offers opportunities to communicate with family and community members and enjoy stories, music and contemporary culture.

Depending on age and prior knowledge, students will progressively learn to:

  • Communicate in familiar everyday situations and understand spoken Hindi.
  • Read and write Devanagari script.
  • Build vocabulary and apply fundamental grammar.
  • Explore Hindi stories, poetry, songs, traditions and festivals.

Additional Indian languages may be introduced as community interest, qualified teachers and suitable facilities become available. Complementary activities may include music, dance and storytelling.

A welcoming place to learn

We welcome students from different backgrounds. Classes are intended to be supportive, respectful and inclusive, with programs suited to different ages and abilities. HSSA aims to work with appropriately qualified and experienced teachers and volunteers.

Parents and families are encouraged to support learning and practise language skills at home. The school also offers a way for families to meet, learn from one another and participate in the wider HSSA community.
